     Plantation's early years.............

In the early 1900's the first railway system to Broward County led to more residents and large purchases of land. The building boom began but was wiped out by one of the worst hurricanes ever to hit Broward County. However, the canal systems and islands off Las Olas remained intact. In the 1930's the Peters family moved from Miami who had already made the Florida Red Potato a poplular choice of food. They became interested in cattle directing them to undeveloped inexpensive land where they discovered the Plantation area, Plantation Acres.

In the 40's, the Peters purchased 10,000 acres for $250,000. The family was instrumental in the discovery of "Plantation Pride," a sorghum used as livestock feed worldwide and used, even today, to help world starvation.

In 1949, the Plantation Homeowner's Association was formed and was considered the unofficial government of Plantation. At the time there was only 40 homes and a county store for mail, odds and ends, and to meet others. But the City was not actually born until April 30,1953. Children were bussed to Fort Lauderdale for school and homes were valued from $17,000 to a max of $50,000. By the 60's, parks and recreation formed. The Community Center housed the library for years.

By the 70's, thousands moved into Plantation and the popular Deicke Auditorium and Cental park was formed offerring baseball, football, swimming and tennis. Plantation Acres remains the the less interupted area with the largest plots of land per resident. Today, over 85,000 residents, a multi-cultural community, enjoy Plantation as their primary home.
